EL DUENDE GITANO DE MELCHOR DE MARCHENA
EL DUENDE GITANO DE MELCHOR DE MARCHENA. Transcribed by Alain Faucher. Melchor Jimenez Torres was born in Sevilla in 1907, an exceptional guitarist who became an emblematic figure in the world of flamenco. His style was nurtured under the influence of Javier Molina, Curro de la Geroma, and the man he admired above all others, Manolo de Huelva. His masterful accompaniement of the 'cante' became legendary, as did his capacity to literally draw 'cantaores' out of themselves and help them give their very best; a rare quality indeed. His 'toque' was in the gypsy tradition, highly strung, alternating between periods of tense silence and sudden flights of fancy, passing instantly from 'piano' to 'forte', stimulating the singers and magnifying their ability to expres themselves still further. This explains why for decades he was found everywhere on the flamenco scene and on record at the side of such giants as Juan Talegas, Pastora Pavon, Jose Mense, Antonio Mairena, El Sordera, La Perla de Cadiz, and, above all, Manolo Caracol. Together Melchor de Marchena and Manolo Caracol became long time favourites with audiences at Canasteros in Madrid and in 1958 these two great artist recorded a memorable anthology of work under the title "Una Historia del Cante Flamenco". | $47.95 |
